Lead in Paint and Water

Ohio Lead Hazardous Properties
The Ohio Lead Hazardous Properties list is a searchable list of properties in Ohio whose owners have refused to comply with an order from the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) or its delegated local board of health to correct known lead hazards.

They contain known lead hazards and have been declared unsafe for human occupation, especially for children younger than six years old and pregnant women. No person should be living in these properties until the identified lead hazards have been corrected, the properties pass a clearance examination, and the lead hazard control order has been lifted by ODH or its delegated local board of health.

ODH’s surveillance system automatically updates the list whenever new properties are added to the list or properties are removed because they have complied with lead orders.

Lead Service Lines
To learn more about whether a residential address has a known lead service line, consult the maps submitted to the Ohio EPA by public water systems (PWS) showing areas that contain or are likely to contain lead service lines.

PWS currently are required to identify only the public portion of the water line. Some PWS also identify the private portion if they have that information. If the map for your PWS does not provide information about the private portion of the line, contact your PWS to find out if they know whether the private portion of the line is a known or likely lead service line.

Disclosure of Lead Service Lines

Real Estate Disclosure. Ohio does not have a statute requiring that lead service lines be disclosed on real estate disclosure forms.

Tenant Disclosure. In Cincinnati, landlords must inform tenants In writing prior to the tenant signing a lease whether the unit has a lead service line (see Title VIII, Business Regulations, Chapter 871, 871-12. – Lead Service Line Notification to Tenant, Cincinnati Municipal Code).

Ban on Lead Service Lines in Cincinnati. The City of Cincinnati prohibited lead services lines as of June 28, 2017 and provided an automatic grace period to property owners (see Title IV, Public Utilities, Division M – Lead Service Line Replacement Program, Sec. 401-128. – Lead Service Lines Prohibited, Cincinnati Municipal Code.) The requirement is triggered when the City notifies the owner the line needs to be replaced.
